CHAPTER 31

CHOOSE

Ben looked from Zoe to the collapsed, very still, very dead scytheclaw.

He grinned, then froze as the moment slotted neatly into place.

His brow furrowed. Why did this feel so uncannily familiar?

The feeling stuck with him as he walked toward his friends. Each step felt… expected. When he spoke, it was like reciting a line for a half-remembered script.

“That was incredible…” he said, the words feeling borrowed. “That wind spell… and you have a blinding spell…”

“Plenty more—”

“—where that came from,” Ben finished for him, frowning in confusion.

“Uh… yeah,” Will said, giving him a funny look. “Pretty much.”

“Zoe?” Will asked, turning to her. “You good?”

Her gaze was intent, fixed on the cliffs upshore.

She took a cloth from a pouch on her belt, absently wiped the blood from her blade, then sheathed it without taking her eyes from the cliffs.

Ben shared a look with Will, and they followed after her.

From the corner of his eye, the shadows twitched. But when he looked, nothing had changed.

Ben felt as if he were in a waking dream. He already knew what they would find, and the knowing was deeply unsettling.

They reached the rusted out truck, and Zoe proceeded to speak with someone who was both there and not there.

A wave crashed on the beach, the sound undercut by a faint buzz like radio static. Ben glanced back but everything appeared normal.

“Will,” Ben whispered. “Something’s wrong. Really wrong.”

“Yeah, no kidding,” Will whispered. “Zoe’s sister? I mean, how… it doesn’t make any sense.”

“No,” Ben said. “Something worse.”

The sensation was unnerving. It was like he knew everything that was about to happen, but only an instant before it actually did. A deep foreboding sent a shiver down his spine. Somehow, he knew something very bad was about to happen.

Zoe held out the emerald dragonfly, and Lilly took it.

“I’ll find you,” she said. “I swear it, Lilly. I’ll find you.”

A high pitched whine filled the air. Ben’s skin began to prickle.

His heartbeat sped up, and his breaths came in short bursts.

“Run…” he said, looking around as he stumbled back. “Run!”

Will grabbed Zoe’s pauldron and pulled her. She reluctantly turned and the three of them began sprinting down the beach.

The deep, static thrum filled the air, just as Ben knew it would, vibrating every atom of his being.

The world jittered, and parts of the beach flickered in and out of existence. A thunderous roar filled the air as the cliffs began collapsing down onto the beach. Fragments of stone flickered midair, reorienting as they fell. Every step, leap, and stumble felt choreographed, like he was performing the steps of a dance he already knew.

Look out! Nil warned.

Ben stopped just as a massive slab of stone rolled past before him, then ran on, leaping and dodging over stones, nearly falling several times until he was finally free from the worst of it.

Choking on dust, he glanced back and caught a glimpse of Will’s bubble, and Zoe within it. He stumbled out of the dust cloud and looked out over the ocean.

“A skyscraper,” he breathed.
